We've  gotten off to a pretty good start for this school year. We are all part of a great team working together  for  super healthy goals.  Our theme through-out the year   is always fitness and fun!  Our first fitness test has been moving along.  Kindergarten does a dash, while 1st through 6th grade does the "shuttle run."  I see some future track stars!! Adaptations are always made as needed through-out any and all of our activities that we do for any student needing them.  So far , we have worked on many physical skills at our skills stations for self-improvement, fun and great exercise.  Our locomotor lane is the area to practice and improve our locomotor skills which transfer to many sports and games.  Reinforcing and keeping up practice of these basic skills improves coordination and timing and provides great exercise!  We've participated in a variety of fun tag games, some rhythmical activities, parachute activities and have currently enjoyed some awesome Flag Tag games.  We have been working on our football throwing skills (our younger students throwing at our X targets on the wall and our older students throwing accurately to their receiver in our file relay skill station.  The word "accurate" was our most recent vocabulary word.  Some of our other vocabulary words were: physical fitness, safety, responsibility, leadership, good sports, rules, illustrations, cooperation and teamwork.  Our youngest students listened to a story about Billy Bully and some listened to a story called Get up and Go, both stories helping to teach concepts kids need to know.    By the way, my personal acronym for the word "GYM" is Get Yourself Moving!!  We've completed some worksheets when we needed to hold P.E. classes in the student's classrooms if the gym was used for special reasons.  We will always support and promote positive interactions and learning about real-life skills as well as physical skill variety and fun activities.  Remember to exercise and work-out at home and in after school activities.  My schedule will only allow an occasional Walking Club.  I'll do my best. Our K-2 students will be performing the "Seal Crawl," while our 3-6 grade students will be performing the "Isometric Push-up."  I've asked the students to practice push-ups to prepare and of course, adaptations will be made as needed.  We've had flexible gym classes as needed for gym usage and other necessary and fun activities enjoyed by all:  music rehearsals and programs at H.S. fund-raiser pick-up, Holiday parties and so on.  We will always promote physical activity with fun wherever our classes are held and via a variety of exercise and activity vehicles in which to provide positive interactions and hopefully, for students to show their excitement and interest in P.E. Class and exercise!  ( My goal forever!!).  We'll always cover our basic foundational skills and games of tradition, while very often addding a fun twist with some "variations on a theme" with some crazy game ideas.  The plan behind this is to capture an interest in physical activity and for all students to feel engaged and important in the process and enjoy it as well!  There IS something for every student to feel good at and we'll find it !  We have been working on good throwing form, blocking and team cooperation skills , a variety of physical skills practice, Wintertime favorites, and physical fitness activities in P.E. Class as well as on Fitness Friday, where all students and everyone work-out while I instruct and hopefully motivate all to participate over the loud speaker with fun music.  I've asked our students to exercise over the Holiday break with friends and family and tell me when we return to school how they "worked-out"  over the Holiday Vacation.      Dear P.E. Some classes will be participating or will have participated in a variety of Thanksgiving theme-related activities: some tag games; as able, many classes having learned to set the Thanksgiving table while using sports/gym equipment in a fun relay for this learning experience and of course, our youngest students were "Dancing with the Stars" while performing a simple Turkey Tango-style dance!  We will finish-up our November Circuit Training Challenge as of the 30th.  Our Gym Turkey has been looking terrific displaying "Class" feathers representing best exercise efforts.  All students who participated the required amount of gym classes received or will receive a certificate for their great participation.  I'm glad for everyone's efforts during our Fitness Friday Activity and I hope everyone has enjoyed the Thanksgiving break and did remember to exercise.  I am always thankful for "Good Sports!" We will continue our jumping test, practice and enjoy some locomotor fun and rhythms, relay action with great teamwork and games of cooperation.  We will be practicing a variety of scooter skills and applying these skills in some fun scooter games and activities.  We'll even try the Scooter Limbo!  We like to always promote physical fitness with variety!  As always, adaptations are made as needed for every activity.  Our 10 point contest winners will be announced and rewards given in P.E. Get ready for Kid's Choice Activities for the next 2 cycles.  All good sports will exercise the voting process for their favorite choices .  All students are getting ht.and wt. measurements by our Nursing Dept. during these cycles and some are having an Energy Program in the gym.  We will continue to rattle our "Mr. Bones" ( Skeletal System Activity) and I'm hoping we'll exercise our "funny bone" with a good joke or riddle! Class.  I invited all Good Sports to take my fitness challenge this cycle and avoid the "spiders" hanging around the gym!  We enjoyed good music to dance to while waiting for our turn and which also kept us motivated to get through the course.  We'll continue our "Mr. Bones" activity for fun while reinforcing learning of the skeletal system.. We'll also remember our  Firefighters who help keep us safe. Class with some great Cageball fun promoting team efforts and cooperation , throwing skills and demonstrating our ability to follow game rules and safety rules.  Our youngest students did a "spiders" movement activity with music CD incorporating the crab walk when they were to "travel" along a special pathway.  As always, adaptations are in place as needed for everyone.  Some classes were able to participate in a game incorporating a "buddy" system promoting collaborative efforts and helpfulness.  We will rattle "Mr Bones", a fun activity which helps us to learn about our skeletal system and reinforce that knowledge.  Everyone, please exercise with me on Fitness Friday! In the meantime, some of our classes were able to go to the H.S. Track to try it out!  Third through sixth grade students: stay tuned for more floor hockey fun and our youngest students will work together and continue their fun, cooperative game.  Some first grade classes will be going on their Field Trip this week.  All other classes will continue will continue their sit-up testing with modifications as needed.  As always, while I do testing, the rest of the students are able to go to various skill stations for individual practice, while our Leader Squad assists. At the beginning of the 4th marking period, we will begin "sit-ups," which will determine our abdominal strength and endurance.  Practice some sit-ups at home on a safe, comfortable surface so you are ready for your test.  Students in 1st through 6th grade are timed for a minute and Kindergarten for half a minute.  Modifications to this test will be made as needed.  During this cycle, we will be "setting up" for some Volleyball and other fun net games.  As always, we will learn about "real-life" skills in P.E. class as well as many physical skills. Class and we'll be adding up half-court basket shooting scores for friendly competition while supporting teamwork skills with this half-court challenge!  Our younger students will practice and reinforce previously taught locomotor skills in a fun activity, as well as participating in a character-building game!  We will finish up our testing for upper body strength (K-6) and provide re-testing as needed.  Next test is the "Air Chair" for grades 1-6.  We will provide adaptations and flexible lessons for P.E. Classes on the 28th (P.M.), due to the H1N1 Vaccine in the gym. Can you believe we've finished up with our second marking period?  As they say, "time flies when you're having fun!  I'll soon be announcing our "10 Point" Contest Winners for best cooperative efforts for the second marking period and as always, those classes will receive their reward in the near future.  "Congratulations to all students who always do their best in P.E. Class and everywhere!   We will continue our testing for upper body strength- I have seen improvements and many students have reported they've been practicing to maintain and improve their fitness levels.  I'm very proud of you!  For our youngest students-please continue to practice tying your shoelaces-I'm very happy to have some good helpers in each class.  We work on many physical skills in P.E. Class during our skill stations practice time and we will add some ball handling/dribbling activity to this practice time, as well.  Get ready for some fun challenges in gym class during this cycle.  We will practice being good team players while cooperating and encouraging each other.  Remember, best efforts always "shape-up" your good health&amp;amp; fitness and fun AND "Good Sports are Winners in my book! We will participate in a variety of fun activities with a Thanksgiving theme: some tag games, most classes learning to set the Thanksgiving table using sports/gym equipment using a fun relay in this learning process and our youngest students will "Dance with the Stars" while they perform a simple Tango-style Dance!  Please everyone do your best on Fitness Friday and I'll also look for your participation in Walking Clubs through-out the week.  Remember to exercise over the Thanksgiving Break. Please wear your sneakers and tie your shoelaces very well  because I'm inviting you to take my fitness challenge in this week's activities in P.E. Class.  Will you be able to escape from and avoid  the "spiders" hanging around in the gym?   It's time for our Obstacle Course, including some good music to help keep us motivated and allow us to dance a little while waiting for our turn.( We may even include a "polka" in honor of our Anthracite Heritage).  We will continue our "Mr. Bones" activity to reinforce knowledge of the skeletal system, as well.  Are you ready for this fun fitness challenge?  I will provide any adaptations as needed for our classes this coming week.  Also, remember to thank our Firefighters for all they do to help us and keep us safe. Our first Physical Fitness Test is moving along. Kindergarten has been doing the "Dash" and First through Sixth Grade has been doing the "Shuttle Run."  We have some fast runners in our gym classes!  We hope to finish-up and do any re-tests within the next week or so.  "Go Team, Fitness is the theme all year in P.E. Class!"  We've participated in a variety of fun tag games parachute activities and lately we've been "kickin' it up" for soccer fun and skills practice and great games with friendly competition! We also promote exercise beyond the school day via extra-curricular activities with friends and Family Fun, too!  Recently, we have been offering the opportunity to apply for free passes to those 4th and 5th grade students whose families participate in winter activities at area ski resorts.   This week in gym we will practice positive interactions, practice good throwing form with accuracy, blocking and team cooperation skills, as well as practice many other skills while doing our best and having fun!  We're shaping up in gym class! Our Gym Turkey looks great, displaying "Class" feathers representing best efforts.  Way to go, kids!  We will finish our jumping tests/re-tests.  We will participate in fun activities with a Thanksgiving Theme and our youngest students will perform a simple-style Tango Dance.(We're Dancing with the Stars!) We will continue to rattle "Mr. Bones", an activity used to reinforce our knowledge of the skeletal system.  Perhaps we will even exercise our "funny bone."  Bring in a good joke or riddle for our next P.E. class if you are in the Leader Squad.  Please wear your sneakers so you can jump your farthest on our next test.
